Goffstown to
host First-In-The-Nation debates
GOFFSTOWN - Crews were busy Wednesday at St. Anselm College building the set for the Democratic and Republican presidential primary debates.
The first-in-the-nation-primary debates will be held at 7 p.m. on June 3 and 5, with the Democrats debating on Sunday and the Republicans on Tuesday.
The debates are sponsored by WMUR, CNN and the New Hampshire Union Leader.
With just a few days to go before the first debate, about 40 workers were busy constructing the set where the candidates will square off before a national audience.
"The challenge is, these guys are running for the most important job in the world," said Alec Miran of CNN Special Projects. "You want to make it look nice, dignified and presidential."
To make what is normally the home of Hawks Hockey into a political forum, crews stretched a mile of cable and dozens of lights.
When it's finished, 600 sold-out seats will be put in, surrounded by tight security.
The upcoming debates have prompted familiar scenes in New Hampshire, such as a CNN set on a local street corner.
Reporter Dana Bash said that even though the primary is seven months away, voters have a lot of homework to do on the candidates.
"There are so many of them," Bash said. "If any of these voters on either side of the aisle want to get a sense of each of these candidates and what they stand for, it's going to take a long time to go through that list."
The debates will be shown on WMUR-TV and on WMUR.com, which will include a variety of features, such as real-time responses to the debate, live blogs and analysis. |
