Shea-Porter's
drilling ruse

Rep. Carol Shea-Porter is seen in her recent television ad pandering to public opinion and claiming that she supports offshore drilling, but it is abundantly clear that Shea-Porter and her Democrat leaders in Washington have every intention of reinstating the ban on offshore drilling as a “top priority” next Congress. In a shallow political ploy aimed at trying to increase her odds for re-election, Carol Shea-Porter says: “I’m Carol Shea-Porter and we have to do something right now about energy prices. That’s why I support more drilling for oil… I approve this message, because we can’t wait.”
Meanwhile, Shea-Porter’s Democrat leader in Washington told CNSNews.com on Wednesday that “restoring the ban on new offshore oil drilling leases ‘will be a top priority for discussion next year’ if the Democrats retain control of Congress.” “‘I am sure it will be a top priority for discussion next year,’ Hoyer said when CNSNews.com asked him if Democrats would fight to restore the ban.” “‘Oh yes,’ Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) told CNSNews.com when asked if he expected Democrats to attempt to restore the ban. ‘I would expect them to try to restore the moratoria but that's why its so important to get the word out to the American people that, yes, this is a great thing, but it makes it so much worse for Democrats if the people of America find out that they are doing this only to get by in the elections then turn around and cut off the supply.’” (CNSNews, 9/24/08)
The offshore drilling ban that the Democrats want to reinstate will again lock up 85 percent of the Lower 48 Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) energy resources. According to the U.S. Minerals Management Service (MMS), America’s deep seas on the OCS contain 86 billion barrels of oil (the U.S. imports 4.5 billion per year). The United States is the only developed nation in the world to forbid safe energy production on its OCS. And since Carol Shea-Porter has voted in lock-step with her party leaders 98.1% of the time, there is no reason to believe that she wouldn’t stay true to form and help the Democrats block these offshore oil resources by reinstating the ban next year. “Voters in New Hampshire have every reason to believe that if they vote for Carol Shea-Porter, she will turn her back on them as soon as she returned to Congress and would help her party leaders reinstate the ban on drilling,” said NRCC spokesman Ken Spain. “Carol Shea-Porter’s false claim that she supports drilling goes far beyond her usual Washington double-speak. Shea-Porter is being completely dishonest about her willingness to increase America’s oil supply.”
