9 is very bad for many reasons |
Article 9 is asking for about a million dollars for some
new trucks. One is a fire engine and the other two
are for public works. A dump truck and a recycle
collection truck.
This article is very bad
for Goffstown for a lot of reasons. It's not just
that we can't afford these things right now, even though
we probably need them. It's the way this whole
thing was put together.
First, the purchase is
being put out to bond. I heard the selectmen
myself say they were doing this because we can't afford
to buy them outright like we've always done. That
should be a warning to everyone right there that we just
can't afford them, period.
The other thing that
bothers me is that the public works trucks are going to
be used as replacements for trucks that are working just
fine right now. So why are we getting rid of them
and buying new ones? I again heard selectmen say
at the deliberative session that they were being
replaced because that's what the schedule called for.
Well it doesn't make
sense to me to spend like that just because of a
schedule. Especially with the economy the way it
is and all of us in Goffstown hurting pretty bad and
looking at a HUGE tax increase next year (even if we
don't buy these trucks). Why don't they do what I
have to do, and that is not buy a buy car but fix mine
and keep it going another few years. If I can do
it, why can't the town?
But most of all, it
really bugs me the way this article is set up so that we
taxpayers have no choice but to go with all of them or
none of them. That seems like a tricky political
game to me. I heard Scott Gross say that it was
done this way so that we voters couldn't pick and chose
the trucks we wanted to buy.
That's just not
right. I think it's up to us to decide what we
want to spend our money on and not be tricked into
having to get all these trucks at once.
There are too many things
wrong about this whole truck deal and how it is put
together.
I say vote NO on Article
9.
