Hunters who would like the chance to take an additional antlerless (doe) deer during the upcoming fall hunting season in Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) M, can purchase a special permit from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, as of July 2. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department will issue a total of 5,500 special antlerless deer WMU "M" permits this year. The permits reflect a long-term objective to reduce the deer numbers in the most urbanized part of New Hampshire.

Wildlife Management Unit "M"

The Unit M permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis and cost $13. Applicants must hold a current New Hampshire hunting license or archery license and may buy only one Unit M permit each year. Hunters may use this permit on any day during those seasons for which they are legally licensed, including the archery, muzzleloader and regular firearms deer seasons. The permit allows the hunter to take one additional antlerless deer in Wildlife Management Unit "M".

The special antlerless deer Unit M permits have been issued by Fish and Game since 1997 in an effort to stabilize the size of the deer herd in southeastern New Hampshire and minimize deer-human conflicts, such as vehicle collisions and destructive browsing of ornamental plants. Unit M has the highest deer density in the state. The boundaries of Wildlife Management Unit M are:

from the junction of Rte. 13, in Brookline and the NH/MA border, north on Rte. 13 to Rte. 101 in Milford, north on Rte. 101 to I-293 in Manchester, east on Rte. 101 to its junction with the Squamscott River in Exeter, north along the Squamscott River to Great Bay, north along the Strafford/Rockingham County line in Great Bay and Little Bay to the New Hampshire/Maine state line to the Atlantic Ocean, south along the New Hampshire coast line to the NH/MA line, west along the NH/MA state line to its junction with Rte. 13 in Brookline.

A note of importance here is that if you are using a Special Unit M permit, you may not take two deer at the same time. Your first deer must be registered before you try to take your second deer.

Interested hunters can purchase their Special Unit M permit direct from New Hampshire Fish and Game Department at 11 Hazen Drive, Concord, N.H. 03301 or call them at (603) 271-3422 to request an application by mail. You may also purchase a permit online by going to:
www.nhfishandgame.com. More information on the permits can be found at: www.wildlife.state.nh.us/Hunting/Special_Unit_M_permits.htm. Fall is not too far away.
