One of the most enjoyable aspects of winter is indulging in the sport of ice-fishing. It’s a wonderful way to spend time with family, friends and the kids while enjoying a rather unique kind of fishing. Like any sport, there are skills that must be learned in order for you to be successful in catching fish through the ice. Here is the chance to learn these skills.
Get your family and friends together and come learn about this fun activity to enjoy during the long winter months. A free ice-fishing class will be offered in a three-week Saturday program at Riley Brothers Lumber, 39 Christmas Tree Lane, in Milford, N.H. Join certified fishing instructors from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department’s "Let’s Go Fishing Program". The course will run on January 19 and January 26, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and again on February 2 (time to be determined later).
The ice-fishing class is open to anyone, however, those 16 years of age and under, must be accompanied by an adult. A fishing license is not required to participate in the course. You should reserve your spot by contacting "Let’s Go Fishing" Instructor, Dale Riley. He may be reached via phone Tuesdays through Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at (603) 673-2987 or evenings at (603) 673-4036. Registration for this fine course is on a first-come, first-served basis. All equipment and materials will be provided and, as I already mentioned, the course is free.
During the course, you will learn about ice-fishing equipment, safety and practices as well as some winter ecology of lakes and ponds. On February 2, you will head out to a local pond and put your newly learned skills to the test. New Hampshire Fish and Game’s "Let’s Go Fishing Program" has taught thousands of children and adults to be safe, ethical and successful anglers. The program is federally funded through the Sport Fish Restoration Program. To find out more about the "Let’s Go Fishing Program", readers may log onto the website:
