There’s a serious problem that gun owners need to address. It didn’t take long for the new Democrat anti-gun majority to flex its muscle in the State House. I recently received an alert notification from the New Hampshire Firearms Coalition (NHFC) concerning House Bill 3154, introduced by Representative Eleanor Kjellman, (D) of Henniker, N.H. In essence, it would ban firearms in the State House and Legislative Office Building. As the NHFC states, "These buildings are owned by you, the tax payers, but Representative Kjellman wants to disarm you. She does not trust the law-abiding citizens to carry firearms."
House Bill 1354 will not make people safer. Instead, it will create a gun-free, victim rich zone and Concord will become a preferred place for criminals. They will know that anyone visiting or working in the State House complex will be unarmed and vulnerable, unable to protect themselves or others. When people are forced to leave their self defense firearms in their vehicles, those vehicles and firearms will also be targeted for vandalism and theft by criminals trying to arm themselves.
Further more, it has been proven, time and time again, that when people are armed, criminals suffer from a sudden and acute failure of the victim selection process. Because ordinary citizens were armed, additional tragedy was averted and lives were saved at the Trolley Square Mall in Utah and the New Life Church in Colorado, as well as in other areas of the country. We only need to look at Columbine High School, Luby’s Cafeteria and Virginia Tech. What happens when law-abiding citizens are administratively disarmed? Disaster! Disarming citizens at the State House is only a formula for another tragedy.
You can believe it when the New Hampshire Firearms Coalition says that HB-1354 is only the beginning. If the anti-gun zealots in Concord are able to pass HB1354, they will be emboldened to ban firearms in other places, such as shopping malls, stores, movie theaters, restaurants, parks and hotels. They will not stop. It is imperative that they be stopped now. With your help, we can stop the anti-gun politicians. The NHFC suggests the following ways that our readers can help:
- Attend the public hearing on HB-1354 on February 5th, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. (Room 104 of the Legislative Office Building, directly behind the State House) and express your opposition to it.
- Send the pre-written messages below to Rep. Kjellman at:
Eleanor.kjellman@leg.state.nh.us and to Rep. Michael Rollo, the Chairman of the Legislative Administration Committee at:
Mike.rollo@leg.state.nh.us.
- If you are not a member of the New Hampshire Firearms Coalition, please consider joining them so they can keep you informed. For information on joining and membership, go to:

PRE-WRITTEN MESSAGES
- Dear Representative Kjellman:
Please reconsider your sponsorship of HB-1354. Banning guns will not make anyone visiting the State House complex safer. Banning guns and other defensive weapons will only serve to create victims and empower criminals. Law abiding citizens have a civil right to defend themselves, and others if need be. Please tell the Legislative Administration that you have changed your mind and that you would like them to vote HB-1354 Inexpedient To Legislate.
Sincerely,
- Dear Chairman Rollo:
When HB-1354, relative to security in the State House and Legislative Office Building, comes before the Legislative Administration Committee, please urge the committee to vote this bill Inexpedient To Legislate. Banning guns and other defensive weapons will only serve to create victims and empower criminals. Law-abiding citizens have a civil right to defend themselves and others if need be. I would appreciate it if you would make my request part of the official record of the hearing on HB-1354. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Remember, the hearing for this bill is Tuesday, February 5th at 10:30 a.m. If you are unable to attend the hearing, please send your e-mails now to Representative Eleanor Kjellman and Committee Chairman Michael Rollo. This is a serious bill that will further infringe on our Second Amendment rights and can greatly embolden criminals.
