I generally don’t like to get into politics, but this upcoming presidential election is very important. The wrong choice by voters will be devastating to America’s 2nd Amendment rights, as well as many other issues. Wayne LaPierre, Executive Vice President of the National Rifle Association of America (NRA) says:
"America is the greatest nation on the face of the earth. People from every corner of the world want to study at American schools, work for American companies, settle in American neighborhoods and live their lives protected by American freedoms. We are the world’s shining light of liberty for one reason: our Constitutional right to keep and bear arms. The Second Amendment gives common men and women uncommon power to defend ALL freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. But, now we face a titanic battle with Barack Obama, who would use his victory on November 4th to begin a systematic destruction of America’s Second Amendment."
Mr. LaPierre further stated, "Too many American firearm owners just don’t know that Barack Obama intends to destroy the Second Amendment and restrict our right to own, use and carry a firearm. From day one of the campaign, Barack Obama has claimed that he is for the Second Amendment, but the fact is, his claim rings hollow. Look deeper and you will see that beneath his slippery oratory lies, a history of votes against firearms ownership that makes it clear he intends to gut the Second Amendment. Back in April of this year, Obama described Americans, like you and I, as people who ‘get bitter, they cling to guns or religion….’ No presidential candidate, not Bill Clinton, not Al Gore, not John Kerry, has ever displayed this kind of arrogance or total contempt for the values that gun owners embrace, values like freedom and our Second Amendment rights."
Beyond Obama’s rhetoric, one need only to look at his voting record when it comes to our guns and our freedoms. According to the NRA, in his earliest days in the Illinois State Senate, Obama supported a bill that would require law-abiding citizens to visit their local police department and ask for permission to buy a gun. He also proposed closing every gun shop within five miles of a
school or park - that’s 90% of the gun shops in America. When running for Congress in 1996, Obama answered a candidate survey from the Independent Voters of Illinois in which he openly supported a ban on the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns, a ban on commonly owned long guns and mandatory waiting periods and background checks on gun purchases.
When gun owners exposed this gun-ban agenda, the NRA states, Obama’s campaign denied that he answered the survey, instead claiming that an aid had filled it out. But, the real truth became obvious when subsequent news reports revealed that Obama’s own handwriting appeared in the margins of the survey. Now, when you look at his voting record in the U.S. Senate, you can see exactly what his campaign slogan, "Change You Can Believe In," means to gun owners.
The NRA also points out that as a U.S. Senator, Barack Obama has voted in support of predatory lawsuits designed to bankrupt the firearms industry. He has also voted to ban almost all rifle ammunition commonly used for hunting and sport shooting. As a state Senator in Illinois, he voted to uphold local gun bans and the criminal prosecution of people who use firearms in self-defense. He supports gun-owner licensing, gun registration, gun rationing, useless waiting periods and more. According to the NRA, Barack Obama’s ten point plan to "Change" the Second Amendment includes:
- Banning the use of firearms for home defense.
- Pass Federal laws eliminating your right to carry.
- Ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns.
- Close down 90% of the gun shops in America.
- Ban rifle ammunition commonly used for hunting and sport shooting.
- Increase federal taxes on guns and ammunition by 500 percent.
- Restore voting rights for five million criminals, including those who have been convicted of using a gun to commit a violent crime.
- Expand the Clinton semi-automatic ban to include millions more firearms.
- Mandate a government-issued license to purchase a firearm.
- Appoint judges to the U.S. Supreme Court who share his views on the Second Amendment.
