‘Tis Friday the 13th

I suppose it is well known that Friday the 13th is supposed to be a day of bad luck, so they say. Perhaps that’s the day not to go hunting or fishing? It was October 13, 2003 that I was at my Security desk when one of our lady employees came over and said, “Bob, I know Friday the 13th is supposed to be an unlucky day, but what is the story behind it?” I replied, “Judy, let me think about it. Stop by on your way home this afternoon and I’ll tell you.” It wasn’t long after that the story came to mind...

Friday the 13th
By Bobby O’Harris

Friday the 13th ’tis the day all good Irishmen
go down to their local pub.

They each kiss 13 lovely ladies, and then...

...they step up to the bar and drink 13 mugs
of good Irish beer in 13 minutes.

Then, they all stagger home to their wives...

...and tell 'em 13 lies!

So now you know the story. I guess you could call Friday the 13th Luck O’ the Irish Day.

I recall a few years ago on a Friday the 13th, I set out to go pheasant hunting in Milford. I parked in, what was then, the Souhegan Valley Aquaculture parking lot. I got out, got my hunting gear on, closed and automatically locked the vehicle doors and then it dawned on me. I forgot my ammo that was still in the vehicle. But worse, my keys were locked in the vehicle too! That sure wasn’t any luck of the Irish day for me.

Since I didn’t then have a cell phone then, I had to walk for nearly half a mile before I found a house where some people where home and I was able to use their phone to call my wife. I instructed her how to find me and then I waited for an hour and a half for her to arrive with a spare key. The day certainly taught me a lesson that I never forgot and since then, I always carry a spare key in my wallet.
