Goffstown loses
Bruce Hunter
GOFFSTOWN - Bruce F. Hunter, a long-serving New
Hampshire state representative and former Goffstown
selectman, died on Sunday, September 23rd following a lengthy
illness.
Friends said Hunter will be remembered for his tenure
in politics - three terms as a selectman and 18 years as a
state representative - and for his compassion for others.
Mr. Hunter entered the New Hampshire House in 1989 and sat
next to Leo Pepino of Manchester. Both freshmen
lawmakers, both Republicans, they started a lasting
friendship.
"Bruce was one hell of a nice guy. I hate to say
this, he wasn't anything like me," Pepino said.
While Pepino enjoyed being outspoken, Hunter worked in the
background, Pepino said. He credits Mr. Hunter with his
work on fireworks legislation, the New Hampshire Veterans
Cemetery and the New Hampshire Veterans Home.
Pepino said Mr. Hunter suffered from a bad heart, diabetes and
had recently battled a liver infection. Hunter was the
son of Robert and Elizabeth Hunter. He had been employed
for many years as an ambulance driver for the City of Boston
and retired om 1993 after working with Fireman's Fund
Insurance Company. He moved to Goffstown in 1983.
Mr. Hunter was also a veteran of the United States Navy.
The Hunter family includes his wife, Edna Catherine Hunter of
Goffstown, three step-sons, Robert J. Callanan and Hames J.
Callanan, both of South Boston, and John A. Callanan of
Goffstown; two sisters, Barbara Jensen of New Jersey and
Martha Santorro on York, Maine, along with three
grandchildren.
