Car Collides With Tractor-Trailer On
Rte. 114
Police Say Car Driver Initially Flees Into Woods
GOFFSTOWN - A car crashed into a tractor-trailer on Route 114 early Tuesday morning, and police said the driver of the car fled into nearby woods.
The collision forced the closure of Route 114, or Mast Road, between Henry Bridge Road and Greece Road for several hours. As of 7 a.m., the eastbound lane of Route 114 had been reopened to traffic.
Roy Twist woke up to the sound of the collision, which he said was practically outside his front door. The first thing he noticed was the big rig and police cars.
"The car was sitting there, and there was a young lady there over there by the logs," Twist said.
Police said the woman was a passenger in the car. She was taken to a hospital with what were described as serious injuries. Authorities said the car was heading westbound on Route 114 and traveling at a high rate of speed when it hit the side of the tractor-trailer, which was heading east. The car then bounced off the truck, sending pieces of metal flying.
"There was a wall of debris that shot all the way over here in the yard, right over into the trailer," Twist said.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured. Police said the driver of the car fled the scene.
"A search was conducted, and the party was not found in the area," said Sgt. Louis Copponi.
The driver was eventually found not far from the collision site and taken to a hospital for observation. During the collision, the fuel tanks of the truck were ruptured, and about 30 to 50 gallons of diesel fuel were spilled. Firefighters and others contained the spill and said very little environmental damage was done.
"We're fortunate that there were no storm drains in the immediate area," said fire Chief Richard O'Brien. "There are no brooks that any of the fuel could run into."
According to state police, there was some sort of police action before the crash happened, but Capponi would not elaborate on what kind of police action was taken.
