GOFFSTOWN
- If you think Recycled Percussion has talent, then be sure to vote for the band when it performs live in Los Angeles on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.”
“‘America’s Got Talent’ was surfing the Internet looking for acts, and they contacted us,” said Carlos Cartagena, the band’s manager. “(The show) had people scouring MySpace for acts they thought were interesting. They’re trying to get an act they believe is worth $1 million.”
To make it to Los Angeles, the Goffstown-based junk rock band had to pass auditions in first Boston, New York and most recently, Las Vegas.
“There were a whole bunch of acts, and it was a lot of fun,” said Cartagena. “Now, they’re one of the top 40 acts that have been selected from across the country.”
Each act was also only allowed a 90-second audition piece.
“You’ve got to wow the judges in 90 seconds or less, and it’s hard,” said Cartagena.
“I’ve seen some acts that I thought were amazing, but the judges didn’t think it was worthy of Las Vegas.”
The winning act on “America’s Got Talent” will get a show in Las Vegas for one year in addition to $1 million.
“Attitude, how you dress, your appearance – it all plays a part,” said Cartagena. “That’s how they judge.”
The “America’s Got Talent” panel of judges is made up of Piers Morgan, Sharon Osbourne and David Hasselhoff.
So far, Recycled Percussion’s touring schedule has not been altered, as it has been touring between auditions.
“Obviously, if we’re lucky enough to win, there will be some changes,” said Cartagena.
Band members include band leader and percussionist Justin Spencer, a graduate of Goffstown High School; percussionist Ryan Vezina; guitarist Jimmy Magoon, also a graduate of Goffstown High School; and spinmaster, keyboardist and vocalist Todd Griffin, also known as DJ Pharoah.
“America’s Got Talent” airs on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. for the previous week’s recap, and Wednesdays at 9 p.m. with new shows.
