GOFFSTOWN - The resignation of the school district treasurer days before close of the fiscal year prompted the Goffstown School Board last week to hold a special meeting to choose a treasurer who will serve until March elections.
Larry Emerton, who is also a state representative, resigned from the elected post in a letter to school board chairman Keith Allard, dated June 25. Emerton wrote that he would not be able to devote the time necessary to do the job, which carries a $1,500 yearly stipend. His replacement will be paid a portion of that stipend, according to Allard.
Allard said the treasurer reconciles the financial books of the district -- something district employees do too, but the treasurer acts as an additional check on their work, the chairman said.
The treasurer also signs pay checks. Given the last pay checks of the year are issued this week, Allard said it was imperative the school board find a replacement.
Lissa Winrow, a Goffstown resident who has done similar work for the district before, according to Allard, will serve as a temporary treasurer for the next two months.
The board is also soliciting letters of interest. Those letters are due back Aug. 13 in time for school officials to review them before the Aug. 20 regular meeting.
Allard said the board would be in recess during July.
The letters of interest can be mailed to the Goffstown School District, 11 School St., Goffstown 03045, attention Ray Labore.
The district has received one such letter so far, from former school board member Ellen Vermokowitz.
The treasurer could be selected at the August meeting, or the board could hold interviews, making a selection later. The eventual appointee would serve until the March elections.
At its special meeting last month, the school board also approved two exchange students in addition to the five that normally attend Goffstown High School. The two students are from Brazil and Russia, according to Allard.
In other business, the school district has also extended insurance coverage it has with the Local Government Center to include property and liability insurance, Allard said. The new insurance will cover flooding and gives the district a liability limit of $4 million, he added.
